Michigan City High School Homecoming candidates

Michigan City High School will crown the 2020/2021 Homecoming Queen and King next week! Crowning of the Homecoming Queen typically takes place during the fall but was pushed to the spring this school year due to COVID-19. New this year, students planned to crown a Winter King - bringing back a tradition from the early days of Michigan City High School.  But this, also, was delayed due to COVID-19. 

On Monday, May 24, students will vote electronically for their Homecoming Queen and King, who will be crowned later in the week.  Listed below are this year’s 10 nominees - six candidates for Homecoming Queen and four candidates for Homecoming King.

Luke Heitmann- Alpha Yearbook

Luke Heitmann, son of Scott and Mary Heitmann, is representing the Alpha Yearbook. He is also involved in varsity swimming while being the Editor in Chief for the yearbook. Luke plans to attend Ball State to major in telecommunications. His favorite memory at MCHS was being a part of the swim team. His advice to underclassmen is to turn your work in on time. 

Joshua Schooley- Thespian Society 

Joshua Schooley, son of Matthew Schooley and Karen Klosinski, is representing the Thespian Society. He is also involved in the National Honor Society and German Club. Joshua plans to attend Purdue Northwest to major in nursing. He summarized his favorite memory at MCHS by saying, “Each show finished in the theater felt like a triumph.” His advice to underclassmen is to take care of yourself.  No grade is worth headaches and pain.  Take breaks when you can. 

Lukas Swistek- Rho Kappa 

Lukas Swistek, son of Todd and Joann Swistek, is representing Rho Kappa. He is also involved in varsity soccer, varsity baseball, and National Honor Society, while being Rho Kappa President. Lukas plans to attend Purdue University Northwest to major in sports marketing. His favorite memory at MCHS is sitting in The Den at the football and basketball games. His advice to underclassmen is to enjoy every moment of high school. 

Alex Zaknoun- National Honor Society

Alex Zaknoun, son of Andre and Nisrine Zaknoun, is representing the National Honor Society. He is also involved in varsity soccer.  Alex plans to attend Indiana University to major in exercise science. His favorite memory at MCHS was the Semi-State football game. His advice to underclassmen is to take it all in and enjoy every moment. 

Reese Attar- Rho Kappa 

Reese Attar, daughter of Craig Attar and Ericka Hutton, is representing Rho Kappa. She is also involved in National Honor Society,  Mathletes, Varsity Soccer, Steering Committee, and is our MCHS Student Council President.  Reese plans to attend Indiana University to major in community health. Her favorite memory at MCHS was her freshman year pep rally. Her advice to underclassmen is to live in the present, and try not to worry too much about the future and the past. 

Aviana Garner- National Honor Society 

Aviana Garner, daughter of Megan Lamb and Jerald Garner, is representing the National Honor Society. She is involved in varsity soccer, Rho Kappa, varsity softball, and Student Athletic Training.   Aviana  is also our MCHS Student Council Vice President. She plans to attend Indiana University to major in nutrition. Her favorite memory at MCHS was all of the pep sessions. Her advice to underclassmen is to work hard, but also don’t forget to have fun. 

Taylor Gertner- Alpha Yearbook 

Taylor Gertner, daughter of William and Kelley Gertner, is representing the Alpha Yearbook. She is also involved in Rho Kappa, National Honor Society, and Foreign Language Honor Society. Taylor plans to attend Ball State University to major in pre-law. Her favorite memory at MCHS was attending prom with her best friends. Her advice to underclassmen is to enjoy the time you have with your friends and teachers. 

Savannah Holley-  American Sign Language Club 

Savannah Holley, daughter of Dorothea Holley, is representing the ASL Club. She is also involved in Spanish Club, Improv Club, Quizbowl, City Singers, Mathletes, Theatre, and National Honor Society.  Savannah plans on attending Indiana University to major in music. Her favorite memory at MCHS was prom. Her advice to underclassmen is to involve yourself in as many clubs and extracurriculars as you can. 

Alexa Sparks- French Club

Alexa Sparks, daughter of Kevin and Michelle Sparks, is representing the French Club. She is also involved in varsity volleyball and National Honor Society.  Alexa plans to attend the University of Saint Francis to major in pre-med. Her favorite memory at MCHS is winning sectionals in volleyball her freshman and sophomore year. Her advice to underclassmen is to work hard the whole time you’re in here, because it will be worth it in the end. 

Mia Taylor-  Thespian Society 

Mia Taylor, daughter of Natalie Parker and Dimitrious Taylor, is representing the Thespian Society. She is also involved in Rho Kappa, Helping Hands, and Student Council. She plans to attend Ball State University to major in nursing. Her favorite memory at MCHS was getting a normal prom that she enjoyed. Her advice to underclassmen is to not wait until the last minute to do assignments.
