Mark Heintz, Munster Parks, and Recreation Director, followed the presentation with a discussion on the upcoming programs and events within their town parks. He discusses the role that their parks have played in allowing people to embrace the beautification of Munster.

“We have 30 parks in our community,” Heintz said. “What we try to focus on is giving people the quality of life that they’re looking for. People are always thinking about choosing one community over another whether it’s for utilities or residential situations. We’ve sort of become that frosting on the cake for the people here in Munster.”

Heintz notes that the Town of Munster is often given the opportunity to share what to look forward to in the community across several group meetings. He’s appreciative for being able to speak with groups such as the Munster Garden Club and talk about ways that both sides are working to make Munster a better place each day.

“There’s so many community oriented groups in town that are active and it’s beautiful to see,” Heintz said. “They have a great group of people in their club that might come together for a park clean-up, planting or volunteering at schools. They do their annual garden walk and put a lot of effort into fundraising opportunities as well.”

Wendy Mis, Clerk-Treasurer for the Town of Munster, gave a presentation regarding the public art within their town. She echoes Heintz in the importance of being able to display this work and its projects to various communities in the area.

“It’s the things that people in our town will see every day,” Mis said. “We started a project in 2022 by ordering 36 tulips and making that our symbol. It’s just another layer in our community and has a deeper meaning when there’s a background to them.”

This presentation was exciting for Mis not only because they were able to share the future projects with their residents, but with a group that replicates the same ambitions as the Town of Munster team.

“They’re one of those organizations that add a unique and necessary value to Munster,” Mis said. “They go above and beyond and it’s incredibly helpful when something might need to be done at our parks or the schools. They’re a great group to have in our town.”

Both Heintz and Mis credit the Munster Garden Club for their efforts in illuminating what the town has to offer. Within their own future projects for the Town of Munster, they are looking forward to getting their new golf facilities in place following Labor Day. Providing venues that people can easily gravitate toward and having a funding source to make that happen is also very important in how they represent the Region.

The Munster Garden Club has some exhilarating events to look forward to in the upcoming months. Their 93rd annual state convention will take place at Turkey Run State Park in April. They have several plant sales and their district luncheon in May. In June, they are hoping to start a program that informs and educates a younger audience about their club.
