Myers Elementary School Participates in Hands-On Program with Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District

Myers-Elementary-Porter-County-Recylcing-2016On September 7, the fifth-grade classes at Myers Elementary School participated in a hands-on program focused on renewable energy, presented by the Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District.

The program, which used props to illustrate the process of making electricity, as well as interactive lessons about both renewable and non-renewable energy sources, focused on the potential for today’s students to help the Earth. The goal is for students to develop into responsible leaders capable of developing renewable resources to provide the different types of power we need.

As an example, while learning about solar energy, students who correctly answered the presenter’s questions about energy were given the chance to “earn their driver’s license” by shining a light source over a solar-paneled car to make it move.

In December, students will be treated to an interactive presentation focused on the 4 R’s: reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery.
