Myers Elementary Students Visit Lucas Oil Stadium

Myers-Students-Visit-ColtsIt’s fourth down. The ball is on the one-yard line, and there is time to run one last play. It’s all or nothing and this is how good players become superstars of the NFL. The fifth-grade students of Myers Elementary School were able to imagine themselves in this scenario during their tour of Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, Friday, May 15, when they took their end-of-year trip to our state’s capital.

During this trip, students were able to navigate the always impressive Indianapolis Children’s Museum, tour Lucas Oil Stadium, tour the Indianapolis State House, and wrap up the day with dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory before boarding the buses for home.

Students learned a variety of information in hands-on ways, ranging from mimicking an archaeological dig at the museum to learning how the field turf is made for our state’s professional football stadium. Did you know there’s exactly ONE woman who knows the specific recipe for creating the flawless field turf on which the Colts play? We didn’t, either, but it was fascinating to see the different elements that go into its production!

While touring the state house, students sat in the very chairs occupied by our state’s elected representatives in both the Indiana House of Representatives and State Senate. Additionally, students sat in the state’s highest court, as they occupied the seats within the Indiana Supreme Courtroom. Perhaps Myers students will be getting a first-hand glimpse of our state government by taking advantage of the Page Program offered by the state, in which young people of age 13+ serve as assistants to the representatives in the House and Senate.

A fun yet FULL day was had by all during this memorable journey to Indianapolis. The trip lasted one day. The lessons will last a lifetime.
