Nonprofit organizations team up to deliver vaccines and vegetables

WHAT: HealthLinc, Lake County Eats Local, Legacy Foundation, and Rise NWI will co-host a series of events throughout East Chicago and Gary, Indiana, to help residents get vaccinated and access locally grown produce. The pop-up farmers markets and vaccination clinics are meant to address overall wellness needs of people in neighborhoods around the sites. HealthLinc will distribute the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine. No appointment is needed.

WHY: More than 9 in 10 COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths have occurred among people who are unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated. We are teaming up with HealthLinc East Chicago to make COVID-19 vaccines more accessible to communities that are showing low vaccination rates. The communities where the pop-up vaccination clinics will be all have a vaccination rate under 40%. As a county, vaccination rates are nearly 50%. Individuals can conveniently get vaccinated in their community while getting fresh produce and locally made treats.

WHO: HealthLinc is a federally qualified community health center. Legacy Foundation is the community foundation serving Lake County, IN. Lake County Eats Local is a program of the South Shore Neighborhood Development Corporation aimed at addressing food insecurity in East Chicago and Gary. Rise NWI is a community engagement initiative of Legacy Foundation, currently focusing on vaccine awareness and outreach.
