“This event is an evening where we host women on-site to learn more about their bodies and breasts,” Sanders said. “The purpose is to encourage women to take care of their bodies. We focus on things such as heart health, menopause, bone density and breast health.”

“People can come for screenings, blood pressure or their body mass index,” Sanders said. “It’s essentially a one-stop shop for everyone in attendance.”

It’s a point of emphasis for Methodist Hospitals to have conversations that focus on heart health and provide awareness to the patients. Sanders notes that their programs hold a lot of value when it comes to helping people understand health topics.

“We bring the people from our heart health program and give them an opportunity to do their screenings,” Sanders said. “It’s a well-rounded community program that we have in the hospital, and everyone works together to deliver a helping hand.”

Cardiologist Dr. Jovil Kannampuzha, MD, MS, presented information about atrial fibrillation. “Atrial fibrillation is essentially a disease involving the heart,” Dr. Kannampuzha said. “The heart has several components such as walls and valves. It relies on the regularity of our rhythm. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular rhythm when the blood movement inside the body starts to stagnate.”

“It’s a very prevalent condition that continues to grow,” Dr. Kannampuzha said. “More than 12 million people are projected to have atrial fibrillation by 2030. It increases your risk of stroke by five times. There’s a 50% chance that these patients who suffered a stroke will have another one within the next six months. It’s a serious issue that everyone needs to be aware of.”

Many women in attendance were pleased with Dr. Kannampuzha’s information to help them make the right decisions with their bodies.

“This is what makes it a great event,” Sanders said. “Ever since we started it up, we’ve served more than 1,000 women in total. We provide free screenings, healthy snacks and a health message that women can learn from to take care of themselves moving forward.”

Healthy Night Out is an event that Methodist Hospital puts on four times each year. Heart health was the focus of this event can anticipate different topics of discussion in future events.
