The LaPorte County Soil & Water Conservation Districted hosted the Indiana Northwest Regional Envirothon competition on March 5 at Red Mill County Park. Students attended stations led by professionals in the conservation field, learning techniques and new information with a chance to ask questions about their professions.
Nine teams from six area high schools (Career Academy South Bend, Michigan City High School, LaPorte High School, South Central High School, Washington Township High School, and Westville High School) then competed in a written test covering five environmental conservation topics: soils; aquatic ecology; wildlife; forestry; and this year’s Current Issue: Roots & Resiliency Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change. The top three teams were separated by a mere total four points.
The LaPorte High School Team Bison won 1st Place. The team includes: Micheal St. Arnaud, Cooper Scroggin, Shane Berry, Lyndsey Osborne, and Desiree Vowels.

The Westville High School Team Orange landed 2nd Place and the team includes: Maverick Markos, Aiden Kaiser, Ryan Boots, Mark Wert III, and Bryce Johnston, with Emma Murphy as an Alternate.

The Michigan City Team I.C.P. secured 3rd Place. The team includes: Brooke Lakin, Kaitlyn Milligan, Vivian Taylor, Madelyn Shinn, and Bailey Chavis.

LaPorte Bison and Westville Orange teams will next compete at the Indiana State Envirothon competition on April 23rd in Trafalgar, Indiana. We applaud all students and teams involved for their hard work and dedication to conservation stewardship. Congratulations to our winners and best of luck to the teams competing in April!
