[Informational presentation / class on how to protect your family's computers from viruses, malware, spyware, child predators, and thieves.] We'll provide you with tips on how to install free software which will guard your PC from harm and do the fighting for you. We'll also give helpful advice on how to handle online transactions, emails, and social media sites such as Facebook to ensure your online reputation and personal information stay secure. After attending you will know how to easily lock down your computer's security features. Don't take chances online -- attend this class!

Discover the warning signs for heart disease and how you can keep your ticker in top shape. If you have heart disease or have had a heart attack, learn how to manage your recovery. Big Bands and Radio Shows

Join us for some trivia, hear the songs, and share memories about the golden age of music and radio! Celebrate the sounds of Glenn Miller and other big band-era legends. Relive the themes and stories behind some of radio’s most famous programs, including the Jack Benny Show and others.
Indiana Jones Lived in La Porte County?

Who was the real-life person on whom the Indiana Jones character was based? Believe it or not, it may have been a renowned archaeologist from La Porte County! Come discover some of the lore surrounding the Indiana Jones movie character. Then find out who our famous "hometown" archaeologist was, and learn more about him. Everyone is welcome to come attend this fascinating look at a nearly unknown part of La Porte County history. Be sure to view our Indiana Jones traveling exhibit when you come!
Meterology Field Day
October 1 at Union Mills Branch--6pm
Up-close, hands-on meterology for all! Assistant Professor of Meteorology Teresa Bals-Elsholz from Valparaiso University and her students will join us at Union Mills Branch to guide us through several interactive learning stations including: Tornados, Static Electricity, Hurricanes, Lightning, Rain, Wind, Other weather-related activities. We hope to see you and your family there. Union Mills and Hanna Branches are putting this program on collaboratively.
The Global Cardboard Challenge

Put your imagination to the test! What’s the craziest thing you can build out of cardboard? A playhouse? A flower vase? An arcade game? A boat? Come in Saturday October 5 and show us your creativity. We’ll provide the supplies as well as some ideas for crafts.
Explore Forensic Science

Experts estimate that one out of every three fires in the United States is set deliberately. Watch The Hunt for the Serial Arsonist and learn how real fire investigators used forensic science to solve a difficult case. Try out fingerprinting techniques and discover what makes your prints unique.
This event is being offered as part of Teen Read Week (October 13-19).
Body Body
October 17 Main 8pm-9pm
Seek the unknown by discovering who the killer or killers are in Body Body--a live action version of the card game Mafia. We’ll meet in Youth Services and start playing after the library closes, when there will be plenty of places for a hit man to hide! All participants will be entered to win a Alfred Hitchcock-themed gift basket including a movie, popcorn, candy, and soda! This event is a part of Teen Read Week. Since this is an after-hours program, we will need signed permission forms from all participants. These are available at the desk in Youth Services.
Book Speed Dating

Remember when you met your favorite book? You would spend hours together, never wanting to part, you loved every clever line and the heart-racing suspense…Here is your chance to speed date a variety of other books and decide which will be your next soulmate. Come join the fun! Grades 6-12 only.
Not So Scary Stories
October 23 Rolling Prairie 1pm
This will be a not so scary Halloween story time for preschoolers. Come in costume. Stories, games and a Halloween treat.
Howling Halloween Party
October 24 6pm at Fish Lake
Monsters growl, wolves howl, and kids make themselves as scary as possible on Halloween. Come to Fish Lake Branch dressed in your favorite (scary, funny, pretty or just plain cool) costume best for a "howling" good time of a party! There will be scary stories and games, and who knows what else may happen?
What Happens In The Library When The Lights Go Out?
October 25 Main 6:30-8:30p
What are your favorite magical creatures? Meet them in the Library after the lights go out! Unicorns, dragons, mermaids, and giants are all waiting for you. It’s free fun for the whole family. Children are encouraged to wear costumes, but it is not required to participate in this free event that is sure to be an exciting time for all.
(This program has been very popular in years past with over 400 in attendance within the two hour time frame.)
