The La Porte County Historical Society has been the recipient of many wonderful pieces of art over the years. Some are on display on a permanent basis while some are switched out and replaced when new artwork comes in. For the months of September, October, and November the current display at the museum, called “Off the Wall”, will highlight pieces of art from the Historical Society’s collection, both old and new…ish.
Some of the more recent acquisitions include a pen-and-ink drawing by former La Porte High School art teacher, Goldie Taylor. Also on display is a large painting of the ship the USS La Porte, as well as a painting that shows the land the hospital was built on- only there’s no building- just the sign. Other works include a small watercolor by Isamu Noguchi, a rendering of the La Porte County Court House made from over a thousand tiny pieces of wood, and a model of a coach made by La Portean Roger Ordun for a “Body by Fisher” competition in the 1930’s. The exhibit can be seen mostly on the lower level of the museum.
