Operation: Cops For A Cure

Cops For A Cure Incorporated, a public benefit Corporation, has been established to generate financial support and public awareness for breast cancer and related research. Breast_cancer_ribbon

In March of this year Officer Flora Akers of the Portage Police Department was diagnosed with breast cancer. What started as a show of support by her fellow Portage Officers has now grown to a multi-county effort. Very soon over 1,000 police vehicles in Lake, La Porte and Porter County will be displaying pink cancer ribbons with Officer Aker’s badge number “Portage 139” on the top of the ribbon and “Fight Like A Girl” along the side of the ribbon.

A limited number of ribbons will be made available to the public for $5 on Tuesday April 27th at the Portage Police Department

The ribbons are available to the public at a cost of $5 with all profits from the sales of the ribbons directed to the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” in Officer Aker’s name on behalf of the Northwest Law Enforcement Community. In addition, plans are now underway for a 5k run/walk that will be held in Portage on September 25th. Sponsorships for the 5k are offered at $100, those interested in becoming a sponsor are encouraged to contact the Portage Police Department.

We are very grateful of the staff at the Portage Township YMCA, who have volunteered to assist with the 5k run/walk. Further details will be released in the near future.
