PHS Classes Reunite for a Multi-Year Class Reunion

The Portage Alumni Association hosted its annual multi-class reunion on Sept. 29, 2012 to honor the Classes of 1947, 1952, 1957, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1987 with special recognition to the Class of 1962 for its 50 year reunion. The reunion was held at Woodland Park in Portage again this year. The Alumni Association was very pleased that approximately 214 alumni were present with a total of 277 in attendance. Many of them traveled a great distance back to Portage to reunite with their former high school classmates to celebrate their wonderful years at PHS.

Cocktails, dinner, dancing and fun were had as former classmates got to know each other again! The music was provided by The Music Men and PHS Alumni Keith Reed from Class of 1970. During the dinner, there was a 50/50 raffle with all the proceeds going to the Scholarship Fund.

The Portage Alumni Association's mission is to serve its fellow alumni and to raise funds for future alumni through a Scholarship Fund. With the support and assistances the association receives, it takes great pride and honor in continually being able to give two $500 scholarships to outstanding Portage High School seniors each year.

The scholarship recipients for 2012 were Ali Marie Johnson and Kenneth Guerra. Ali, the daughter of Andrea and Steve (PHS '61) Johnson, is studying nursing at Purdue University in Lafayette. Kenneth, the son of Laura (Patterson PHS '73) and Elias Guerra, is majoring in chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington. Both students were exceptional and worthy of receiving the scholarships.

The Portage Alumni Dinner Dance is already in the works for next year and will be held on Oct. 5, 2013 at the Duneland Falls Banquet Center, which is located at 1100 North Max Mochal Highway in Portage. Classes of 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983 and 1988 will be honored. The multi-year reunion also honors anyone present who has been out of Portage High School for 25 years or longer.

The Portage Alumni Association is in need of volunteers, especially from alumni in each class being honored at next year's event, to help them in several areas in order to have another successful reunion.
