PHS Students Raced to Spring

Portage High School students recently finished the Race to Spring contest, inspired by PE teacher Kristen Peterson. From February 23 to March 18, the freshmen students were challenged to walk or jog as many laps as they could around the gym, up and down stairs, and around the balcony.

8 laps was equivalent to 1 mile. The class with the highest amount of miles would be the winners. Peterson also based their grades for the unit off of how many laps they walked or ran. Karen developed this program to get the students to move and help in the fight against obesity.

The top three individuals and the mental attitude award winner each received a gift certificate to Blythe's Sporting Goods. Zach Smith finished first place with an average of 20.3 laps (2.5 miles). Devin Kludt finished second with an average of 20 laps and Brandon Vickrey finished third with an average of 19 laps. The mental attitude award winner was David Aubuchon.
