PNC’s Night for New Professionals Gives Students Insights to the Working World

Purdue North Central’s Night for New Professionals, held on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM, offered opportunities for jobs and networking within the Business, Management, Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources, and Leadership fields for Purdue North Central students. This after-hours business event gave recently graduated, or soon-to-be graduating students, the chance to connect with local employers. Companies such as Target, Menards, H&R Block, and others were in attendance.

The students and representatives fell into easy conversation, only minutes after the event had begun. “This is a great opportunity for us to experience networking and get out there and meet different companies,” Allison Frye, an Accounting Major, expressed.

Dean of College of Business, Dr. Alan Krabbenhoft emphasized, “Any type of networking opportunity that is provided is extremely important. Probably more so even to young professionals and new or soon-to-be graduates, because they’re the ones that are going to have the greatest chance of struggling to find that first new opportunity.”

In this particular setting, it was obvious that both the students and companies had something to gain. Steve Birk, St. John, Indiana’s Target Store Team Leader said, “[Target] is always looking for the most qualified, energetic, enthusiastic people and a lot of the time, people right out of college are those people.”

Natalie Connors, the Director of Career Development, oversaw this event and conveyed, “It’s a good opportunity for local businesses and students to come together in a cost-effective way.” Unlike many job fairs, this event is held without a fee.

Wednesday night marked the first event set aside for job possibilities and networking sponsored by Purdue North Central. In addition, Nights for New Professionals through the College of Engineering and Technology and the Department of Communications will be held. If you’re searching for a job within one of these many fields, are a PNC student or recent graduate, and missed this most recent opportunity, check your calendar for the next Nights for New Professionals.

They will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011, from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM for Engineering and Technology and Tuesday, October 25, 2011, from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM for Communications.
