Portage Goes Green: Conserving Environment and Saving Money

American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) american-reinvestment-and-recovery-act

Through its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded the Portage Redevelopment Commission a $151,100 formula grant.

This program is component of the national stimulus program enacted by congress in 2009.

Grant funds will be used to make permanent energy saving and conservation improvements to Portage public buildings and infrastructure.

Portage worked with the Department of Energy to develop the following project elements:

Traffic Signal Retrofits to Light Emitting Diodes at the following locations:

Crisman At Old Porter Road
Houston At Willowcreek Road
Willowcreek Road at Mulberry Avenue
Willowcreek Road at Stone Avenue
Willowcreek Road at Lute Road
Central Avenue at Swanson Road
Central Avenue at Dombey Road

Lighting Retrofits to Public Buildings at the following location:

Oakwood Hall, Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road

HVAC Retrofits to Public Buildings at the following location:

Oakwood Hall, Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road


Collectively these investments will produce savings as follows:

Metric Activity: Transportation
Energy Saved: 23.695 million Btu
GHG Reduction: 2,182 metric tons CO2 equivalents (GHG = Greenhouse Gas)

Metric Activity: Building Retrofits
Energy Saved: 1,799 Btu
GHG Reduction: 166 metric tons CO2 equivalents (GHG = Greenhouse Gas)
