Portage Township Parks & Recreation to host Small Household Electronic Waste Collection Event

friends-of-portage-township-logoFriends of Portage Township Foundation Inc. will be hosting a Household Electronics Waste Collection event on Thursday, May 21st at Haven Hollow Park (330 W. 700 N., Valparaiso, IN 46385) from 3-7p.

“The purpose of the event” states Colin Highlands, Environmental Committee member, “is to raise awareness about how our actions impact the natural environment”. Electronics that are improperly disposed can leach nasty chemicals into our water supply. With Salt Creek meandering through our very own Haven Hollow Park, we thought it would be a great location to educate residents about how they can do their part to keep our waterways, and ultimately Lake Michigan, clean”.

To add to the fun, both South Haven and Saylor Elementary Schools will be participating in the event to not only educate students about how to treat unwanted electronics, but also as a contest to see which school can bring in the most unwanted electronics. Donna Stuckert, RWRD Public Education Coordinator reminds residents, “There are four places in Porter County where residents can properly dispose of their electronics at their convenience, and they are listed on our website, ItMeansTheWorld.org. By recycling electronics, we can reuse all of those precious metals and reduce our need to mine for lead, copper and gold, for example. These resources are limited, and once they're gone, they're gone”.

Any small household electronic devises (anything with an electrical cord OR that uses batteries) will be accepted at the event on the 21st including; electronic games, toasters, flashlights, vacuums, radios, DVD players, laptops, computer hard drives, etc.

Friends of Portage Township Foundation Inc. is dedicated to sustaining and expanding the Portage Township Department of Parks and Recreation and inspiring environmental preservation through initiatives designed to raise and leverage funds, increase community awareness and promote enjoyment of the outdoors.
