Officer Monks and Officer Dandurand as well as K9 dog Nakir came to Kyle Elementary to talk about a K9's job on the police department and the importance of staying drug free.
Saylor Elementary
Mrs. Benson from the Porter County Soil & Water Conservation District, came to talk to Saylor 2nd graders about the parts of a plant today. Students looked through a magnifying glass to observe the parts of a plant closely. Then, they discussed the flower, roots, leaves and seeds of the plant, to learn what they do, and why they are important.
PHS Baseball
Portage's freshman baseball team defeated Saint Joseph High School from South Bend, Indiana to win the annual Mishawaka Freshman Baseball Tournament. Josh Ortiz, Tim Roytan, and Conner Mose all had multiple hits in the championship game. As you can see, the long day of baseball hit some players harder than others...
Giving It Her Best
From May 1-5, over 3000 students descended on Anaheim, California for Business Professionals of America final competition which is The National Leadership Conference. Portage High School student Alyssa Mitchell traveled to Anaheim to represent Portage High School in the Business Law & Ethics contest where at regionals she placed 1st and at state she placed 6th. In Anaheim with 69 students taking the Business Law & Ethics test, she placed 22. Everyone at Portage is extremely proud of her effort and poise that she has shown throughout the entire school year, currently ranked number one in the junior class, Alyssa ran the café located in the high school’s media center all school year with no complaints. Along with BPA Alyssa is also involved in student council and is a participant in the upcoming Distinguished Young Women program. “Alyssa is a teacher’s dream” according to Ms. Melendez the BPA sponsor. “Alyssa never complains and is always upbeat and offers suggestions to try to make things better for the program. Alyssa and students like her, are the reason why I continue teach and do what I do”.
