Myers First Graders Head to the Zoo
First graders from Myers Elementary School in Portage recently boarded their buses on route to Lincoln Park Zoo. The weather was overcast and gray, but the chaperones were abundant, and the children were filled with giggles and smiles! The main objective of the trip was for the children to observe animals and plants in their differing habitats. Animal and plant non-fiction books were read to each of the first grade classes prior to embarking on their trip. Students also gained additional information by reading animal books alone and with friends. The first graders’ animal unit of study was enhanced by the exciting experience of actually going to the zoo and seeing the animals up close. At the conclusion of the trip, all agreed that it was the best field trip ever!
Myers Elementary Nature Club
Myers Elementary Nature Club has been hard at work beautifying the school courtyard! Students have pulled weeds and planted flowers and bulbs. They have also added bird feeders and outdoor seating, as well as a brand new picnic table. All students will be able to enjoy the sunshine in their new and improved outdoor space.
Portage High School Students Take Flight At Porter County Airport
Eagle Aircraft hosted a day of flying and aviation education for Portage high school's "Introduction to Transportation 2" students. This marks the 18th time PHS students have taken this field trip. The capstone activity is the result of several weeks of preparation and flight simulation in the classroom. Under the supervision of flight instructor pilots, students took control of the yoke and soared through the skies of northwest Indiana. For some, it was the first time in an airplane. Students also tested their hand at piloting the large flight simulator. The opportunity to experience airport operations, learn from business owners, and interact with industry professionals was a rewarding and fun experience for all.
