Portage Township Schools Update, October 19, 2018

Aylesworth Elementary
A few of Aylesworth's kindergarten students had fun building in our Maker Space. The kids had so much fun working with their classmates in experimenting and working on their problem solving skills!

Kyle Elementary
Mrs. Bananski's 2nd grade students had a program on lady bugs. Sunset Farms came and gave each student a lady bug and they were taught all about them and their habitats. At the end of the program they released their lady bug outside.

Myers Elementary
The 2nd grade at Myers Elementary took a trip to the orchard this week. After a lesson on the orchard, apples and pumpkins, we took a tractor ride out to pick our own apples. We toured the facility to learn the process of taking the apples from the trees all the way to our tables. Students enjoyed having a donut and cider treat, along with bringing home their very own bag of apples and pumpkin! We are ready for Fall!

PHS Environmental Science Class
Portage High School's new environmental science class went on a field trip to Jerry Pavese park in Hobart.

The students got to experience canoeing in an outrigger canoe that was provided by Wilderness Inquiry (Minnesota) and then tested the water quality of Lake George and looked for macro invertebrates led by The Dunes Learning Center.

It was "chilly" but the students had a great time and learned a lot being out in nature.

PHS MCJROTC
On 13 October 2018 Portage High School Marine Corps JROTC hosted a Super Squad competition. Teams from Marine JROTC programs in Michigan City & South Bend competed in Marine Corps Regulation Drill, Physical Fitness & 3-Position Air Rifle. The Portage Sporter Air Rifle Team also utilized shooting mats, kneeling rolls & spotting scopes generously donated by Indiana Friends of the NRA. The new gear & safety equipment was a most welcomed & appreciated addition to the 3-Position Air Rifle Team.
