Porter County 4-H Seeking Youth & Volunteers for 2017 STEM Summer Activities

porter-county-4h-coverCalling all youth and volunteers with an interest in STEM!

Have you ever wondered what makes Nesquik “quick”? Curious as to what keeps cold things cold? Do you want to build a catapult with basic, household objects?

Porter County 4-H will be hosting a wide variety of interactive programs this summer, focusing on STEM! Whether you are a 4-H member or not, we encourage you to join us for various events engaging in the wonderful world of STEM. General age of focus is Kindergarten through grade 5, though older participants are welcome. Programs are hosted free of charge, though registration is required.

If you are 18 years old and older, we are in need of excited, helpful volunteers to lead engaging, hands-on STEM activities working with the youth in small groups. No experience is required, and we offer a flexible schedule, with lesson plans and materials provided to volunteers. If interested in volunteering, please contact Ms. Kristie Hunt, 4-H STEM Program Assistant, at hunt118@purdue.edu or call the Purdue Extension Office at 219-465-3555.

What is STEM? STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. “In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)
