Porter County Art Showcased at ‘Art on the Lake’

The Portage University Center was filled with amazing works of art on Tuesday as the first Annual Portage High School Art on the Lake Art Show & awards ceremony took place. This event wasn’t just for Portage, though. Students from all over Porter County showcased their incredible works of art, and people from across the county had a chance to see these wonderful triumphs of the artistic pursuit firsthand.

“This is my first art show, and I’m really excited my piece got chosen for it,” said Cheyenne Cook, a young artist from Washington Township High School. “I’m also really enjoying seeing all the other great pieces here.”

The time and effort that these students put into their artwork was clear. Not a piece on display, whether it was a painting, photograph, sculpture, or any other artistic endeavor imaginable, was out of place. Everything there was spectacularly crafted, and each student showcased had a reason to be proud.

“This is a real confidence booster,” said Jessica Gomez, a young artist from Portage High School. “It feels really cool knowing that I did a good job at what I love.”

The best part is, this is the first of many art shows to come. Paula Wiese, the art department chair at PHS, could not have been more passionate about exhibiting the work of these students. She made it very clear that this, and the art shows to follow in upcoming years, is all about the students.

“This is all for the kids,” said Wiese. “We have a lot of really talented students here in Porter County, and people need the chance to see their work."

Wiese explained that, in the past, Valparaiso University had presented similar art shows to the community. Unfortunately, they were no longer able to. Wiese and her team took it upon themselves to give these students another chance to unveil their work to the county. This event was also a great opportunity to recognize those young artists whose talent stood out.

Even though every piece was exquisite, certain ones really grabbed the eye. These students received awards and notoriety when the awards ceremony took place.

Thirteen artists were acknowledged for their achievements. Taylor McKinley, one of the student artists, was given a special honor. Ivy Tech awarded her with a free class!

All in all, the first annual Art on the Lake was quite an event, not only for the artists, but for everyone in Porter County. It will be open to the public for two more weeks.

Don’t miss out!

“There’s something here for everyone,” said Wiese. “Everyone should come out and see the show.”
