Porter County District, Hobart Renew Paint Pact

Latex-paintRecycled paint continues to be available for Porter County residents and businesses to purchase at the City of Hobart, thanks to the renewal of the intergovernmental agreement between the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County and the City of Hobart.

Residents and businesses can purchase the recycled paint for $3 per gallon between 7 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the City of Hobart Department of Public Works, 340 S. Shelby St. Non-profit organizations and government agencies can obtain the paint for free.

We hope more Porter County residents and businesses become aware that they can obtain this great product,” said Therese Davis, executive director of the district. Since June of 2012, Porter County residents recycled 812 gallons of latex paint and purchased 213 gallons from Hobart’s paint program.

The people who use it, love it,” said Kelly Kirkilewski, Hobart recycling clerk. “We have a lot of repeat customers.”

Kirkilewski said the product color is taupe/beige and can be tinted to another color. She said many people who purchase it have used it as a primer. Also, people use it to paint their interiors, exteriors, rental properties, and more, including painting metal and cement.

It covers excellently,” she said.

Kirkilewski said the Hobart High School Drama Club has been using the recycled paint to decorate their sets. Additionally, Lake County Government and the Town of Lowell have also used it.

Anyone interested in purchasing the paint should call the City of Hobart to determine product availability, 219-942-6121.

The 2013 pact renewal also means Porter County residents can continue to drop off their unwanted useable latex paint to be recycled at the City of Hobart’s Department of Public Works Department.

This service is very valuable because it keeps latex paint out of landfills, saving our valuable resources,” said Davis.

Paint can be dropped off between 7 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and between 8 and 11:45 a.m. Saturdays. Oil-based paint will not be accepted; neither will latex paint generated by businesses.

Latex paint also will be accepted at the Porter County 2013 household hazardous waste events.

Representatives from the Hobart Paint Recycling Program will exhibit the paint at the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration on April 20, at the Porter County Expo Center.

The intergovernmental agreement between the district and the City will continue through the end of the year.
