Recycling District Promotes Allison Andersen

allisonandersenAllison Andersen, hired as assistant educator for the Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County in January, was promoted to full-time lead educator following the retirement of Abe Paluch, who was the district’s educator for the last seven years.

Andersen will be in charge of the district’s programming in schools throughout Porter County, presenting an array of free interactive programs for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

“I love my job,” Andersen said. “I’m happy that I get to bring environmental education to classrooms. I hope our efforts help to make an impact on the planet.”

District programs complement school curriculums and meet Indiana State Academic standards. Programs include Edible Landfill; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink; Water Watchers; Lovely Ladybugs; Pollution Town; Garbology; and more.

A teacher in the Valparaiso Community Schools for 11 years, Andersen was introduced to the district through a brochure and resulting class visit by Paluch, who presented the program “Wonderful Worms.”

“I have big shoes to fill,” she said. “Mr. Abe was well loved by students and teachers. I’m truly appreciative to have learned all I know directly from him.”

District school programming reaches approximately 6,000 students each year.

“Allison has done a fantastic job in the few months she’s been here,” said Therese Davis, district executive director. “We’re very fortunate to have her take over these programs. She’s a pro.”
