Residents in Walkerton Park, one of Crown Point’s newest subdivisions, won’t have to travel far this summer to find the perfect outdoor space for gatherings and events thanks to Redwood Landscape.
The landscaping company recently finished building a common area for residents to enjoy during the warmer months. Completed in May, the space as a whole comes to about 140 feet by 80 feet and features many different amenities for everyone to use. This includes a few paver patios, one of which is 14-foot by 14-foot with a 12-foot by 12-foot pergola, and another that’s 14-foot by 16-foot, also with a pergola and a table and chairs area. An additional 15-foot by 30-foot pergola has also been built that includes a bigger patio area, as well as a fire pit and a grill and serving area.
“I’ve been told everyone loves the fire pit area specifically — we love to create a space where people can hang out,” said Redwood Landscape Owner Joy Zandstra.
Walkways have also been added in to bring it all together, complete with some finishing touches from accent and bistro lighting.
The idea for the recreational space came about last year when Redwood Landscape partnered with Olthof Homes Project Manager Jeff Yasko. Olthof Homes was the builder responsible for the homes that line the streets of Walkerton Park and has collaborated with Redwood Landscape on previous projects. The two have always enjoyed working together in the past, so Redwood Landscape was excited to join forces again to bring the ideal outdoor setup to life in Crown Point.
“We do a lot of work for Olthof subdivisions, and we landscaped quite a few of their houses. It is great to create an area for the community to enjoy,” Zandstra said.
The common area has already proved to be a great space over the past couple of months. Before completion, the newly paved streets provided limited opportunities for residents to get to know others that weren’t directly next door. The common area has since changed that, creating a space to foster both community and camaraderie for all.
“This has given them an area to gather together as a neighborhood,” said Zandstra. “It gives them a place and location for them to gather and a ‘safe space’ that is open to anyone with no judgments. It lets them get to know each other and hopefully create more friendships.”
This project has been a particular favorite of Zandstra’s for that very reason. She enjoys being a part of a company that creates these exterior designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also help to bring others together as well.
“If the opportunity arises, we would love to do another one,” Zandstra said.
