Redwood Landscape helps clients create the outdoor living space of their dreams

If you want to enjoy entertaining your friends and family or relax in the fresh air right in your own backyard, an outdoor living space might be for you. These versatile and comfortable spaces are sometimes covered by a pergola – a lattice-roofed, open-sided wooden structure. Outdoor living spaces will also typically feature a fire pit, a mounted television, a bar, a grill, or even an outdoor kitchen. Some homeowners choose to add lights or a sound system to their outdoor living spaces as well. Hundreds of Northwest Indiana residents looking to create their own outdoor living space have turned to the professionals at Redwood Landscape for assistance.

For the past 16 years, Redwood Landscape has provided residents of the Region with snow removal services, commercial site maintenance, and a variety of landscaping services. These include the design and installment of private and commercial landscaping and hardscaping. Redwood Landscape, which is based in Cedar Lake and Michigan City, has catered to clients in a variety of locations, including Valparaiso, Crown Point, Chesterton, St. John, and even Mokena and Frankfort in Illinois. Todd Zandstra, president and co-owner of Redwood Landscape, believes that his organization is uniquely suited to providing its clients with quality work.

“Our team truly sets us apart,” Zandstra said. “From the ladies on our sales team to our foremen who design and build outdoor living spaces to our crews in the field, everyone is fun, reliable, and easy to work with. We also do our best to make the project as easy for our clients as possible. We want to help make the designing and building process an easy one. They can hire us, tell us what they need, and then all they have to do is sit back and watch the progress. They don't have to worry about anything and can just go about their lives. Before they know it, they have a completed project they can enjoy.”

Zandstra notes that outdoor living spaces rose in popularity shortly after the pandemic. Some homeowners were putting their stimulus check money towards the installment of backyard outdoor living spaces. Zandstra has also seen that individuals moving to the Region from Chicago and other areas are buying houses and, now that they have backyards, are exploring different outdoor living space options. Zandstra’s personal experience has shown him that outdoor living spaces are an excellent choice for several reasons.

“Resorts usually have really nice patio areas with lighting, sound systems, and other features,” Zandstra said. “You can add all of these things to your outdoor living space at home. When you create an outdoor living space of your own, you can bring back a little piece of that resort you love staying at. My wife and I just had a small outdoor living space installed at our house, and it’s been amazing. I’ve found that bringing that resort experience to our house has been totally worth it. Walking into your outdoor living space makes you feel like you’re on vacation even though you’re still at home.”

Redwood Landscape’s outdoor living space clients are typically middle-aged individuals who are living in their second or third home, Zandstra says. He believes that it’s Redwood Landscape’s job to help these clients understand what they are looking for and how best to make that dream a reality. Zandstra and his colleagues do their best to make the outdoor living space development process a client-driven experience.

“We send one of our staff to meet in-person with the client, walk around the space, and determine what this particular client’s tastes and needs are,” Zandstra said. “We’ll show them some of our previous projects to give them a better sense of what they would and would not like to include in their own outdoor living space. Our goal is to not only give our clients control of the project, but to educate them as well. For instance, if they want a design that is not ideal for their space, we will explain the issues to them and walk them through the necessary adjustments. We give them what they are looking for, but we also make sure that the finished product works for their space.”

The addition of an outdoor living space to one’s home can open up an array of entertainment possibilities and provides homeowners with a safe and comfortable location to relax. After all, why take the time planning your yearly resort trip when you can enjoy the perfect getaway right in your backyard?
