Regional Care Group proudly serves as an umbrella organization in Northern Indiana, combining three entities: Regional Health Systems, Geminus, and Lake Park Residential Care. As Indiana’s largest network of community-based health care and social services, Regional Care Group is proud to celebrate 50 years of bringing essential, community-based care to individuals and families in need.
“We are an organization that truly cares about its community, clients, and employees,” said Eric Evans, vice president of business development. “I have seen the organization continue to strive to meet the needs of the community.”
Regional Care Group combines the rich history of two major mental care organizations in Northwest Indiana. Tri-City Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center began services in 1971 and Southlake Center for Mental Health was incorporated in 1975. The two worked on joint ventures together including the creation of Geminus and Lake Park Residential Care. The merge of the organizations became official in 2009. In 2021, Regional Care Group unified into a three-branched cohesive network. The group collectively represents human service nonprofits in addition to state and federal social service and health care programs.
“We are committed to expanding services and improving access to care, focusing on integrated physical and behavioral health to meet community needs,” Evans said. “Our goal is to support local law enforcement and courts in providing long-term care, ensuring individuals and families receive the treatment necessary for success and well-being."
Regional Health Systems functions as a healthcare provider offering behavioral health, primary care, dentistry, inpatient, residential and addiction services. Geminus, a social service agency, runs programs like Head Start and community partnerships that support families. Lake Park Residential Care provides housing for adults with mental health conditions, especially those on the verge of homelessness.
“This milestone isn’t just about looking back on five decades of service,” said Regional Health Systems Chief Clinical Officer Angela Comsa. “It’s also about renewing our promise to stand alongside our neighbors and partners so that no one faces a health challenge alone. We’re here to ensure every person who needs support finds a path to real hope and lasting well-being.”
Last year, Regional Health Systems completed a new Crisis C.A.R.E. Unit that operates 24/7. For all those seeking a safe space, the Crisis C.A.R.E. Unit serves as a tremendous asset to local law enforcement and families facing mental health crises. In addition, the mobile response teams go into the community to meet individuals where they are.
“Instead of being taken to jail, individuals can be assessed at the Crisis C.A.R.E. Unit and receive immediate care,” Evans said. “It is amazing to see how we can help de-escalate situations and identify next steps for individuals’ future care.”
As Regional Care Group approaches its 50th anniversary in August, a golden jubilee gala is set to be hosted at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville. The celebration will kick off on Friday, May 23. This is the first time in two years that the gala will be held in May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. The gala celebrates both the legacy and the group’s commitment to integrated care.
“We want this gala to celebrate the wonderful growth and milestones we have achieved,” Evans said. “This has been made possible by our dedicated staff, partnerships with other organizations, and the communities we serve. As a golden jubilee celebration, this gala will be a great opportunity for togetherness and for looking forward to our continued positive impact in Lake County and Northwest Indiana.”
The Regional Care Group Gala is always a classy affair, but the planners will be pulling out all the stops for this year's celebration. The Golden Jubilee Gala will have a New Orleans theme and will feature an interview with Lee Strawhun, the organization's founding CEO. During this discussion, Strawhun will reflect on Regional Care Group's history and its future.
The proceeds from the gala will support the mental health care and long-term residential services that Lake Park Residential Care offers to low-income and homeless individuals. For gala sponsorships, tickets and donations, please visit RCGgolden.givesmart.com
