Ribbon Cutting Kicks Off 2024 Great Lakes Grand Prix at Sunset Grille

The ribbon cutting event for the 2024 Great Lakes Grand Prix marked the beginning of an exciting week of powerboat racing and community celebration in Michigan City. Hosted at the scenic Sunset Grille in Washington Park, the ceremonial kickoff brought together local officials, race organizers, and VIP members to celebrate the start of one of the summer's most thrilling events.

Race Week for the Great Lakes Grand Prix serves as a prelude to the high-octane powerboat races.

“The VIP is a meet and greet for the racers and the public, we’ll have a band and food, drinks. It's always a good time,” said Scott Miller, The XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix Race Director for Visit Michigan City Laporte. “I’m excited to see the boats out there, there's nothing more exciting than watching these guys open up on the water. Watching the competitiveness these guys just have a blast doing what they love doing. I just want to wish all the racers good luck this weekend. Everybody stay safe and have a good time.”

Jake Arnett, executive director of Visit Michigan City LaPorte, highlighted the event's growth and impact over the years. 

"Fifteen years ago, we started this great event in this region, and it has taken over our community. We are so happy to be back," said Arnett. "We have a record number of boats this year, and this week will bring significant economic impact that's much needed in our community." 

Arnett extended a warm welcome to all race teams and sponsors on behalf of the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"We're so excited to have all of you here this evening as we kick this event off,” Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch, said. “Thank you to the LaPorte County CVB, who always do a phenomenal job ensuring that this event goes off without a hitch. Thank you all so much for your dedication and commitment to this."

As the ribbon was cut, the crowd applauded and eagerly made their way to Sunset Grille to celebrate, enjoying the food, live band, and socializing at the rooftop bar. As race weekend unfolds, visitors can anticipate a series of races showcasing the best in powerboat racing, along with racer meet-and-greets, and a boat parade. Racers are eligible for a variety of awards, including trophies for race winners and overall champions, as well as awards for the fastest lap and Best in Class performance in different boat categories. 

Over the years, the Great Lakes Grand Prix has grown significantly, attracting international racing teams and new festivities. Over the past 15 years, this event has continued to grow and evolve, strengthening ties within the community and boosting local tourism, driving economic benefits for Michigan City.
