Smith Family Honors Byron Smith III with Major Gift

Valpo Parks is grateful to announce a generous donation from the Smith family in honor of Byron Smith III, who passed away on January 6th, 2024.

Byron was a dedicated umpire for Valpo Parks and spent countless hours on the ball fields at Fairgrounds Park. Byron's unwavering dedication for over 40+ years and 10,000+ games as an umpire has etched a permanent mark on the countless players and spectators fortunate enough to cross his path.

To honor his legacy, the donation will be used to renovate the diamond ballfields at Fairgrounds Park. In recognition of Byron's dedication and passion for the game, the newly renovated diamond fields at Fairgrounds Park will be proudly renamed the Byron Smith III Sports Complex at Fairgrounds Park

“We are incredibly grateful to the Smith family for their generous donation,” said Kevin Nuppnau, Director of Valpo Parks. “Byron was a beloved member of our community, and this gift will ensure his legacy lives on for generations to come.”

The renovation project will include improvements to the playing surface, fencing, dugouts, lights, and other amenities.

A dedication ceremony will be held to officially rename the complex the Byron Smith III Sports Complex at Fairgrounds Park on May 8th at 5pm CST. The ceremony will take place at the north entrance to the ballfields.
