On Saturday, February 29th, the St. Mary Catholic Community School Science Olympiad Team competed at the Ivy Tech, Lafayette competition. The two teams of students walked away with 19 medals! St. Mary's of Crown Point placed second overall and secured a spot at the Indiana State Science Olympiad competition at Purdue University on March 21st. This will be the Wildcats’ second year in a row competing at the state level. The students were tested in subjects like heredity, fossils, food science, and ornithology. The students showed their knowledge of the scientific process with Experimental Design and their ability to code in Scratch with Game On. They also took part in building events like mousetrap vehicles and ping-pong parachutes. Sixth grader and first time competitor Danny Shea said, “I loved my experience with Science Olympiad. It was very fun and I will do it again next year. This was very educational, and I learned a lot. For example, I learned how to code. I had never coded before without help and now I am pretty good, if I do say so myself. I loved my experience with it and I would recommend this to young thinkers who want to challenge themselves and learn about new things.” A returning student, seventh grader Addison Henry, said, “It was a great experience watching all of our hard work pay off. I can’t wait to compete at the next level!” The team is coached by Mrs. Mary Catharine Skinner, Mrs. Theresa McLoughlin, Mrs. Lisa Hughes, and Mr. Steve Davis.
St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point was opened in 1872.
