Tallian Appointed to Legislative Study on Employment, Labor Issues

Senator appointed to eight committees ranging from budget to environment

State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage) has been appointed to serve on the Interim Study Committee on Employment Issues, a new committee established this year to review a number of contentious labor issues debated during the 2011 legislative session, including workers’ rights to organize and project labor agreements.

Sen. Tallian was also reappointed to serve on the Pension Management Oversight Commission and the Unemployment Insurance Oversight Committee. The Pension Management Oversight Commission meets during each legislative interim and is charged with overseeing public retirement funds in Indiana, including those for teachers, public safety workers and other public employees.

The Unemployment Insurance Oversight Committee was established in 2009 under comprehensive legislation cosponsored by Tallian to repair the state's bankrupt Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. The committee is charged with studying the makeup of the trust fund and will continue to review methods to provide benefits to unemployed Hoosiers.

Sen. Tallian will continue to serve on the State Budget Committee, which provides continuing legislative oversight of state budget implementation. First appointed to this position in 2008, Sen. Tallian has played a role in bringing greater transparency to budget cuts implemented by the executive branch as well as pushing for more accountability in state spending.

Additionally, this year Sen. Tallian will also serve as a member of the Child Custody and Support Advisory Committee, Indiana Heritage Trust Committee, Environmental Quality Service Council, and the Illiana Expressway Proposal Review Committee.

The General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation.
