Representatives from Georgia-Pacific and United Way Northwest Indiana gathered for a check presentation, highlighting their shared commitment to strengthening the community.
Garrett Kimble, plant manager of Georgia-Pacific’s Wheatfield, Indiana location, voiced his support for United Way’s mission—especially the Level Up program, which helps working individuals struggling to make ends meet.
“I think Level Up is a great program,” Kimble said. “Many people are struggling while working hard to make a living and still need support. This program helps bridge the gap for those who don’t quite qualify for government assistance but are still barely making it. They need help, and Level Up provides it.”
Chris White, President and CEO of United Way Northwest Indiana, expressed his gratitude for Georgia-Pacific’s support and emphasized the program’s focus on the local ALICE population—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.
“Level Up and other programs, but only possible generous support of our donors,” said White. “ Despite a bustling local economy, too many hard-working people are barely getting by. Their lives are tough, but they manage. However, if one thing goes wrong—like an illness that causes them to miss work without pay—their stability can collapse. We want to help these individuals break out of that cycle and get to a place where they can truly thrive.”
United Way Northwest Indiana has created Level Up to support individuals above the poverty line. Donations help those who are working but still need extra income to get through the week. Jim Murdie, Georgia-Pacific human resources manager, is involved in supporting this initiative.
“This donation supports the Level Up program. “ said Murdie. “We first met with United Way Northwest Indiana last year, and they introduced us to the program and its mission. It’s designed to help people who earn too much to qualify for government assistance but struggle to make ends meet. Level Up helps them get on a better path by providing education, assistance with bills, and resources to become more employable. We thought that was impactful, so our support was primarily financial to help sustain their efforts.”
Georgia-Pacific's relationship with United Way Northwest Indiana began with a donation, which sparked a strong partnership. They believe in the impact of Level up and are proud to back it.
“We have about 115 employees here, so it’s a great place for people to make a living and support their families," said Kimble. “One of the key benefits of Georgia-Pacific is that we produce a product used in homes such as drywall. We’re doing important work for the community. That’s why we want to support it.”
