Valparaiso Economic Development Corporation’s board builds a thriving community

Valparaiso’s success story is fueled by community members who work tirelessly to shape its future. A key part of this progress is the Valparaiso Economic Development Corporation (VEDC) – an organization dedicated to fostering smart growth, supporting businesses, and enhancing the city’s quality of life.

Behind the scenes, a team of leaders ensures that Valpo remains “the perfect place to be.”

One of those board members is William A. Hasse of Hasse Construction Company, whose expertise in construction and development plays a pivotal role in bringing VEDC-backed projects to life.

Hasse, who was invited to join the organization, quickly found that his mission aligned with VEDC’s goal of creating a thriving, community-oriented city.

“Working towards a successful Valparaiso is good for both our industry’s success and for the city,” said Hasse.

Hasse’s work has supported major developments like Journeyman Distillery, downtown apartment buildings, and residential expansions north of town.

“The VEDC and locals have been watching the city continue to grow in a lot of different areas,” said Hasse. “There have been a lot of positive developments throughout the area.”

Hasse also supported recent tax abatements for the Viking Medical Center, ensuring that businesses investing in Valpo receive the support they need.

For Hasse, it’s not just about construction – it’s about building a future where people want to live, work, and stay.

“We all benefit from economic development,” said Hasse. “The VEDC pushes for community-friendly developments that make Valparaiso stronger.”

Joseph Coar of Tonn and Blank Construction also brings a lifetime of experience to the VEDC board and is deeply invested in Valparaiso’s transformation.

“Working with the VEDC is wonderful because they are dedicated to bringing advantageous projects to the Valparaiso area,” said Coar. “They do a tremendous job of bringing enormous economic value to the city of Valparaiso.”

He highlights key projects such as the Grand Gardner Hotel and the Lincolnway parking garage, which have improved both infrastructure and the city’s aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, Coar sees the VEDC as a crucial link between city officials, developers, and businesses, ensuring that every project serves the broader community.

“This level of tremendous growth takes cooperation between the City of Valparaiso, the owners of local businesses, and the developers,” said Coar. “The VEDC has helped electrify the city.”

Beyond business and construction, the VEDC also strengthens Valparaiso’s relationship with its largest institution – Valparaiso University

Eric Johnson, Valparaiso University’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, also serves on the VEDC board and emphasizes how economic development impacts students, faculty, and the city as a whole.

“Being a member of the VEDC Board is huge because it helps me and the university understand what the economic development strategies are,” said Johnson.

Housing projects like The Linc provide much-needed living space near campus, while developments like the Grand Gardner Hotel offer a venue for university events and visitors.

“Valparaiso University is the largest employer in Valparaiso,” said Johnson. “Therefore, anything we can do for economic development and quality of life supports our faculty.”

Johnson also highlights downtown development as a key priority, particularly for students who don’t have cars. By integrating the university more closely with the city, the VEDC helps create an environment where students and faculty feel connected to the broader community.

“Valparaiso is a great place to live,” said Johnson. “It’s the place itself, the quality of life, and what that brings to our faculty and students.”

With forward-thinking leadership from Hasse, Coar, Johnson, and the entire VEDC team, Valparaiso is poised for an even brighter future.

Their combined efforts ensure that the city continues to attract new businesses, create jobs, and foster a sense of community.
