In 2021 the Valparaiso Police Department and the Valparaiso Community Schools initiated the D.A.R.E program. The Valparaiso D.A.R.E. program was revamped in 2009, with an evidence-based prevention curriculum based on Socio-Emotional Learning Theory, which identifies basic skills and processes needed for healthy youth development, such as, self-awareness and management, responsible decision-making, understanding others, relationship and communication skills, and handling responsibilities and challenges. The curriculum uses this theory to teach youth to control their impulses and think about risks and consequences, resulting in more responsible safe and healthy choices. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is being delivered in all 50 states, plus worldwide in 50+ countries reaching more than 1.5 million students annually. The Valparaiso D.A.R.E. program is delivering the core curriculum of D.A.R.E. to over 5,000 students. Along with the core curriculum, D.A.R.E. Officers deliver enhancement curriculums to include: Dangers of vaping, alcohol, tobacco, internet safety, medication safety, and bullying.
The vision of the D.A.R.E. program is to work toward having a D.A.R.E. officer for every school in the Valparaiso Community Schools, St. Paul Catholic School, and Immanuel Lutheran School to deliver the core curriculums. The Valparaiso D.A.R.E. program currently has two D.A.R.E. Officers, with two more being trained in June of 2022. D.A.R.E. Officers undergo an intensive 80 hour, 2-week course focused on implementation of delivering the core curriculum by understanding active learning, learning modalities, and multiple intelligences.
The Valparaiso D.A.R.E. program's success depends on the contribution of the Valpo community, to help us deliver the experience and knowledge to our children. The contributions will provide fun-filled experiences to the children, such as prizes, shirts, and parties, along with classroom booklets, supplies, and sending more Valparaiso Police Officers to become certified D.A.R.E.
