On October 24, 2024, the Valparaiso Police Department and Porter County Sheriff’s Department joined together to honor members of their respective agencies for selfless acts of bravery, heroism, and dedication stemming from the April 25, 2024, critical incident that resulted in the shooting of an armed suspect by officers from both agencies. The gathering was held at the Porter County Expo Center, where officers were recognized for their quick actions that prevented additional threat of harm and undoubtedly saved lives. In attendance were friends, family, and members of each department, observing the awarding of several commendations. Presentations were made by Porter County Sheriff, Jeffrey A. Balon, Mayor of Valparaiso, Jon Costas, and Chief of the Valparaiso Police Department, Andrew McIntyre. The following commendations were awarded:
Valparaiso Police: Department Commendation

During the ceremony, Chief McIntyre praised the cooperation and partnership with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, stating, “This was a collective effort, and it highlights the strength of our departments and the unwavering commitment we have to each other and to the community.” Chief McIntyre further acknowledged the support from the Porter County 911 Center, Indiana State Police, Valparaiso Fire Department, and the families of those involved.
“We are grateful for the courage, the professionalism and the compassion of our Valparaiso Police Department. The VPD consistently puts public safety above all else and the City of Valparaiso supports their efforts each and every day,” said Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas.
As Sheriff of Porter County and the prior Chief of Police at Valparaiso Police Department, Sheriff Balon stated, “I could not be prouder of the Officers from two agencies that I have a very personal connection to and care deeply about. On April 25th, officers from two separate agencies acted as one to stop a known threat to our community. These officers knowingly and willfully put their lives and safety on the line to protect the citizens of Valparaiso, and did so with expertise, professionalism and integrity.”
