Valparaiso Police Swears-in Five New Officers

The Valparaiso Police Department has added five (5) additional police officers with the swearing-in of Brad  Carlson, Austin Janik, Josh Dixon, Josh Hart, and Tony Lopez yesterday. Mayor Matt Murphy performed the  ceremony within the Council Chambers of City Hall, with numerous officers, civilian staff, family, and friends  present to witness the event. During the ceremony, Chief Andrew McIntyre welcomed Carlson, Janik, Dixon,  Hart, and Lopez to the Valparaiso Police Department family.  

Carlson is a 2014 graduate of Chesterton High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Vincennes Uni versity in 2019. Carlson arrives in Valparaiso with prior police experience, having served Bluffton, Indiana  since 2019.  

Janik is a 2020 graduate of Valparaiso High School and is currently working toward his bachelor’s degree at  Ball State University. Janik has prior law enforcement experience, having served the Henry County Sheriff's  Department as a correctional officer prior to his appointment.  

Dixon is a 2019 graduate of LaPorte High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University  Northwest in 2023. Dixon has also completed an internship with the University of Notre Dame Police De partment.  

Hart is a 2009 graduate of Restoration Christian High School in Sellersburg, Indiana. Hart has further served  in the ministry for 10 years and worked in business operations, prior to his appointment.  

Lopez is a 2013 graduate of Lowell Senior High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s  College in 2017. Additionally, Lopez coached girls’ high school basketball at Washington Township High  School, prior to his appointment.
