The Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs of Valparaiso have contributed enormously to our community. Through fundraisers, events, and programs, they’ve been able to promote and support several local and national causes. The two groups were at it once again during the first ever Rotary vs. Kiwanis Chili Cook-off, held on February 22 at the Valparaiso VFW.
Although these two clubs are known for their friendly rivalry, members of both banned together to support a group close to home. All the proceeds were given to the VFW Post #988 in support of veterans and their families. Not only did the partnership between the two clubs illustrate the importance of cooperation, but it also made for an amazing turnout.
Aaron Ingram from the Valparaiso Kiwanis club said, “Rotary and Kiwanis both do a lot for the community, so we thought it would be great to have a social gathering while raising money for the VFW as well.”
22 Rotarians and Kiwanis members showcased their talents in the cook-off. Attendees of the event were able to purchase tickets and sample the different types of chili. Some had unique names such as the “Another Level Chili”, and others had unexpected but delicious recipes, such as the “Beef and Venison Chili”. The official judges were Porter County Museum Board Chair Joanne Urschel, Sheriff Dave Reynolds, and Art Georgion from Stacks Bar & Grill. The judging officially began at 3:30, allowing people to socialize and set up beforehand. Several of the competitors also brought in homemade desserts that samplers could purchase with their ticket.
Jan Stump of Valparaiso Rotary said, “There has always been a friendly rivalry between us, but coming together for something important is really what we’re all about. This the first combined effort in many years, and we’re extremely pleased with the turnout!”
What made the cook-off so interesting was that the judges had no idea whose chili they were sampling. Additionally, attendees got in on the action and were able to vote for their favorite chili. They also had the option of purchasing a bowl of their favorite chili for $5.
The winner of the cook-off took home the sought after trophy and title as the first ever Rotary vs. Kiwanis Chili Cook-off Champion. The evening only got better with the launch of the Cornhole tournament. Rotarians and Kiwanis members went head to head and dueled it out.
The laughter, the smiles, and the mouth-watering smells made the event a memorable experience for all. Events like the Rotary vs. Kiwanis Chili Cook-off illustrate how collaboration along with generosity makes for an unforgettable recipe.
Congratulations to Aaron Ingram, who won the Chili Cookoff, and to Jan Stump, who won the People’s Choice Award!
