Valparaiso University Expands Academic Offerings with New Minors, Graduate Certificates, and Updated Majors

Valparaiso University proudly announces a suite of new and updated academic programs featured in the 2025–2026 academic catalog. These additions reflect Valpo’s continued dedication to academic excellence, career readiness, and alignment with industry demand across diverse fields of study.

New Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

Secondary Education Minor

A streamlined path for students pursuing licensure to teach grades 5–12, this new minor supports content-area majors with a clearly defined curriculum. Courses include topics like educational psychology, curriculum design, diversity and equity in education, supervised teaching, and methods for working with English language learners and students with mild disabilities.

Project Management Minor

Designed to complement any major, this minor builds students’ skills in planning, executing, and managing complex projects — preparing them for success across business, nonprofit, and technical fields.

Human Resources Minor

This program offers practical coursework in organizational development, employment law, and talent management — ideal for students interested in leadership, business, or human capital roles.

Cyber Security Specialization Graduate Certificate

Offered through the Computing and Information Sciences department, this graduate-level certificate equips students with technical expertise to address modern cybersecurity challenges and opportunities.

Public Safety Social Work Graduate Certificate

Housed within the master of social work (MSW) program, this certificate prepares social workers to serve communities in public safety contexts, including support for first responders, justice-involved individuals, and vulnerable populations.

Astronomy and Space Sciences Major

Previously known as astronomy, this updated major now includes three concentrations:

  • Space Science – Emphasizing coursework in astronomy, engineering, and remote sensing to support careers in aerospace and scientific research.
  • Public Science – Focused on science communication and outreach, including media production, museum education, and public engagement.
  • Astrophysics – Designed for students preparing for graduate studies in astronomy or physics, with advanced coursework in quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and mechanics.

Integrated Public Health & Healthcare Leadership Major

Formerly public health, this major now incorporates a leadership component to better prepare students for management and advocacy roles in healthcare and public service sectors.

Spanish Major and Minor

With a refreshed curriculum focused on Spanish for professional use, students will develop language and cultural fluency applicable to careers in business, healthcare, public administration, and more — aligned with Valpo’s successful Spanish for business certificate.

Moving Forward

“These program innovations are a strategic investment in Valpo’s future and in the success of our students,” said Eric W. Johnson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “We are intentionally aligning our academic portfolio with emerging market demands and societal needs, ensuring that Valpo graduates are not only competitive in the workforce but also equipped to lead and drive change in their fields.”
