Variety Show Entertains Crowd at LPHS

For a decade now, La Porte High School has hosted an annual talent show, or Variety Show as it is called at LPHS.

Originating in 2004, the Variety Show started off as a fundraiser for Choral Director Tom Coe’s show choir. No one knew how big of a hit the show would become.

In its infant years, the show was passed from program to program; first from show choir to drama club to band, until the Band Director MIckey Stisher made the show a permanent fundraiser for LPHS’s entire music department.

Held on Friday, March 22, this year’s show sure didn’t disappoint any expectations.

“The students never cease to impress the crowd with a wide variety of talent,” Coe said.

Twin sisters Hannah and Heather Locke, previous participants, have been prepping for their dance routine since November 2012.

“Hannah and I love to dance and we love performing for crowds. We both attended the show as freshmen and it really inspired us to get involved,” said junior Heather Locke.

Encore performer and musician Landon Blackburn auditioned for a total of four acts.

“We were looking at a small variety show this year. I didn’t want that! I expanded my musical horizon and now I can do more than play drums,” Blackburn said.

Newcomers even joined the show.

Sophomore Zoe Potter performed her first vocal solo.

“I love to sing, so I decided to do something fun. Plus, my sister does it every year, so why not make it a family thing?” Potter said.

LPHS’s foreign exchange students got involved as well to add some cultural flavor to the show.

“It was my only chance,” Shiwen Zhou, hailing from China, said. “I am an exchange student so I could only do this once. Music is easy to spread and I really wanted to share my Chinese culture.”

The acts were lively, exciting and intriguing. For many, the show left the audience members eager to get involved in next year’s production.

Who knew LPHS was brimming with so much talent?
