Volunteers strengthen, form backbone of Urban League of Northwest Indiana’s positive impact in the Region

Through its educational programs, symposiums advocating for diversity and inclusion, scholarship opportunities, financial assistance, and much more, Urban League of Northwest Indiana is a powerhouse for strengthening social, educational, and economic conditions across Northwest Indiana. With many moving parts in play to help improve the quality of life for local communities, the team works with many volunteers to help these programs thrive. Urban League currently has around 100 volunteers on its team who help these programs to great success, truly forming the backbone of the organization.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of every program and event we organize,” said Alisa Spencer, Urban League neighborhood resource administrator. “Whether they’re assisting with tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, guiding students at the Scholarship Fair, or facilitating conversations at the Diversity and Inclusion Symposium, they turn our goals into tangible outcomes. Their efforts ensure we reach the people who need us most, making our vision of equity and empowerment a reality.”

Urban League has ample opportunities for volunteers to get involved and make a difference in their communities. One way includes VITA, a program overseen by Tersina Jones that runs in partnership with the IRS to provide free tax preparation services to individuals with income up to $67,000. Here, volunteers help clients navigate tax filings and ensure accuracy throughout the forms.

Volunteers also play a big role in the various events Urban League hosts throughout the year. The Federation of Block Clubs, a component within Urban League, has volunteers to help with planning, setup, execution, registration, logistics, and general support for its three major annual events. During Urban League’s annual scholarship fair, volunteers help with registration, set up, event navigation, and more throughout the event as students browse various vendors for financial opportunities in higher education. Additionally, volunteers are a big proponent of Urban League’s Diversity and Inclusion Symposium and Luncheon, both events very central to the organization’s mission.

No matter their role, all volunteers have made a positive impact through their service with Urban League.

“Everyone can make a difference. Whether you have a few hours a month or can commit to a larger role, there’s a place for you at Urban League. Volunteering isn’t just about helping others — it’s about building connections, learning, and becoming a part of something bigger than yourself,” said Spencer.

One of these volunteers is Angela Carver, Federation of Block Clubs assistant. Through her volunteer work, she has found so many valuable resources within her community and loves that she is able to make a positive impact on many around her through her service.

“I volunteer with the Federation of Block Clubs, which is a phenomenal institution filled with people who just love their communities,” said Carver. “Knowing that as a volunteer, even though I'm working, Urban League is constantly and insistently working for me, us, the community, the city, the people, the youth, the seniors – it's just incredible.”

Carver also appreciates just how much the entire Urban League team is passionate about helping the communities around them. She credits CEO Vanessa Allen-McCloud with creating an environment that lets volunteers know just how much their time and effort are appreciated and the wonderful difference they make each and every day.

“I'm thankful because I'm able to be a part of an institution that's constantly progressing,” Carver said. “Our CEO is so passionate about this work, and her concern is so sincere. I'm so grateful to be a part of this team. I'm also grateful to be able to let somebody know that we're doing amazing work over here.”

Urban League welcomes everyone to come out and volunteer. There are positions available for everyone, so no matter someone’s interest or skillset, there is always a home for them at Urban League.

“We welcome volunteers from all walks of life! Whether you’re interested in helping with tax preparation, supporting educational events, or contributing to community-building efforts, there’s a place for you at the Urban League. Every role makes a difference, and we’re grateful for the incredible dedication of our volunteers,” said Spencer.
