Wilkie awarded with Portage High School’s first Coach Mattix Scholarship

The Portage High School Athletic Department would like to congratulate Colton Wilkie on being selected as the first recipient of the Coach Mattix Scholarship.

Former PHS coach Bob Mattix was an Indiana Hall of Fame football coach for more than 40 years in the region with stops at Portage, Hobart, Michigan City, and Crown Point. He also coached at Wabash College and West Central. As a coach, he upheld the highest ideals of integrity, sportsmanship, character, and team above self. He instilled in his players and fellow coaches a pure love for the game, and he was passionate about the student-athlete and development of their character. He believed the athlete should work hard and contribute to the greater good of the team and insisted on respect for the coach, respect for the game, and respect for fellow players.

Wilkie is a recent graduate with the Class of 2023 and was the quarterback and wide receiver for the football team. Next year, Wilkie will attend and play football for the University of Indianapolis.

The Mattix families recognizes Wilkie’s success as a student athlete and numerous achievements during his high school career with this $1,000 scholarship.
