Join in the fun at the La Porte County Historical Society’s special WLS Barn Dance Variety Show on Saturday, May 23rd at 7 P.M. on the lower level of the museum. Listen to the songs of the Maple City Four, Linda Parker, Red Foley and other radio stars as that bygone time is recreated by La Porte performers.
While preparing for the Maple City Four display that has been on exhibit since March 1st, lists of their songs and other radio stars’ songs were discovered and will be performed. The “New” Maple City Four consists of local performers, Robert Richter, Matt Robinson, Jim Lampl, and Bruce Johnson. The rest of the Barn Dance ensemble is Lucy Vergo, Sandy Gleim, Robert Dure, Solitaire Miles, and Susie Richter, all accompanied by Rose Marie Dure.
Some of the songs included will be “Blue Skies”, “Aura Lee”, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” and some that are not as well known, such as “When Nellie Got the Gong.” There will be some audience sing-a-long, gospel, and surprises. The show will be performed in an old radio style format. Doors will open at 6 P.M. so come early and save a chair. Regular museum admission will apply. The La Porte County Historical Society Museum is located at 2405 Indiana Avenue in La Porte, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00A.M. to 4:30P.M. The museum is accessible to those with disabilities.
