Non-Traditional Employment Options are
the Focus of Conference for Middle School Girls

MICHIGAN CITY, IN — Eighth-grade girls from middle schools across La Porte County will gather at the A. K. Smith Career Center in Michigan City next week for the NEW (Non-traditional Employment for Women) Conference to learn about careers in which women are traditionally under-represented. The girls will take part in roundtable discussions led by professional women from across the region, and will try hands-on activities exposing them to diverse careers.

Eighth-grade girls will be attending from Krueger and Barker Middle Schools in Michigan City, as well as La Porte, New Prairie, and La Crosse.

WHO: Keynoting the event is Alicia Cannon, CEO of APEX Filling Systems.
Among participants in the roundtable discussions will be women representing careers including EMT, police and fire, UPS, banking, environment, airlines, science, project management, military and national guard, construction, electrical, transportation, and more.

WHEN:           Wednesday, October 20, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Central Time

                        Keynote address: 9:10 a.m.

                        Roundtable presentations: 9:50 a.m.

                        Hands-on “try-it” sessions: 11:45 a.m.
