Staff from the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County will teach residents how to compost in their backyards during May workshops at various locations around Porter County.
Composting offers a unique opportunity to contribute to and directly benefit from part of the solid waste solution, recycling, and results in a rich soil amendment great for gardening purposes. Attendees will learn how to backyard compost, incorporate compost into their yards or gardens and more.
Workshops are planned at 6 p.m. on the following dates: Wednesday, May 1, at Brinka Cross Gardens, 427 E. Furness Road, Town of Pine; Tuesday and Wednesday, May 7 and 8, in the Interpretive Center at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, 775 Meridian, Valparaiso; and on Tuesday, May 14, in the Woodland Park Blue Spruce Room, 2100 Willowcreek, Portage. The workshop will also be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 13, at Sunset Hill Farm County Park.
Online registration has begun and is available at www.ItMeansTheWorld.org. The registration fee of $13 includes a sturdy backyard composting bin along with handy guidebooks to backyard and worm composting. Registration deadline for each session is the Friday prior to the date.
