“It will bring yet another type of entertainment to our patrons. Moonlight Cabaret will start later in the evening and the shows will run about 90-minutes and feature various cabaret artists.” Says Brian Schafer, Facility & Business Director for the Memorial Opera House.

The first Moonlight Cabaret on March 6 will feature national cabaret artist Gino De Luca and his musical tribute, Pop! Go the 70’s.

With Pop! Go the ‘70s De Luca will take the audience on a musical journey through a decade that featured a bevy of talented songwriters and vocal artists.

The program includes remarkable music by Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, Janice Ian, John Denver, Helen Reddy, Melissa Manchester, the Carpenters, and more (maybe a few ‘70s Broadway numbers and some of those delightfully tacky TV commercial jingles).

Originally from Chicago, De Luca has been entertaining audiences since he was six-years old. Recognizing his musical talent, his parents gave him accordion lessons and encouraged him to perform in musicals in high schools and at area theatres. Accordion lessons progressed to guitar, trumpet, violin, and, finally, to piano lessons, which shaped the remainder of Gino’s musical life and career.

De Luca first performed as a professional cabaret artist at Orphan’s (now defunct) in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Since then, Gino has performed as soloist, collaborator, pianist, and music director in well-known cabaret venues in Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Iowa City.

As a composer and director, De Luca has written and compiled several cabaret shows including: The Romance Express; Pop! Go the 70s; Love Walked In: Gershwin and Beyond; Come Saturday Morning: 60s and 70s Songs of Travel; and, Long Ago and Far Away: A Tribute to Karen and Richard Carpenter.

De Luca is in his second year of doctoral studies at the University of Iowa working toward a PhD in Music and Voice Literature.
