Northwest Health Adds Internal Medicine Residency Program

Northwest Health Adds Internal Medicine Residency Program

Northwest Health has earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for its new internal medicine residency program which will help attract, train and retain physicians to the region. This internal medicine residency program will add to the existing graduate medical education at Northwest Health, where an ACGME-accredited family medicine program is already operating.

ACGME is an independent organization that sets and monitors the professional educational standards for preparing physicians to deliver safe, high-quality medical care. Northwest Health is set to welcome internal medicine residents later this year.

With ACGME accreditation, Northwest Health's internal medicine residency program can participate in the National Resident Matching Program, a mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for residency programs with the preferences of residency program directors.

Residency programs are clinical training programs for doctors who have graduated from medical school and are ready to receive training in their area of specialization. Internal medicine residents spend three years in a residency program. The Northwest Health program’s mission is to train physicians to become excellent internists capable of utilizing a strong foundation of both inpatient and outpatient medicine to succeed in the career path they choose.

“The addition of this internal medical residency program expands our ability to train even more physicians who share our commitment to clinical excellence and outstanding patient care,” said Dr. James Leonard, CEO, Northwest Health - Porter. “Our faculty includes a dedicated group of physician educators with years of experience as faculty in university and hospital-based residency education training. We appreciate their dedication to expanding our medical education programs.”

The internal medicine program’s leadership team includes Aaysha Kapila, MD, program director; Shaun Mehdi, DO, associate program director; and core faculty Kailash Bajaj, MD, Harpreet Singh, MD and Sangeeta Sehgal, MD.
