Schools in Porter County are invited to participate in the first ever Rain Barrel Design Competition that will be judged during the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration, scheduled to take place at the Porter County Expo Center on April 20.
The competition is sponsored by the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County in cooperation with MS4 communities across the county.
Teachers interested in participating must register for the competition on www.ItMeansTheWorld.org by Feb. 15.
“The competition is a great way for teachers to incorporate Earth Day and conservation into their classes this spring,” said Therese Davis, executive director of the District.
Participants will receive a rain barrel that they can paint or decorate with environmentally-friendly materials to illustrate an environmental theme.
All rain barrels in the competition will be displayed at the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration and judged by event attendees. The winning class will receive two hand chairs made out of recycled plastics. Second and third place prizes will also be awarded.
All schools, public and private, and all grades are invited to participate Limitations include one barrel per teacher; maximum two barrels per school.
